Government data released this August shows India's coconut product exports rose 62% to ₹7,038.35 crore in FY2025-26, powered by a shift toward value-added products — a signal buyers and suppliers of Indian coconut should not ignore.
India's coconut sector has quietly become one of the country's fastest-growing agri-export stories. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release dated 18 August 2026, India's coconut product exports reached ₹7,038.35 crore (USD 794.70 million) in FY2025-26, a 62% increase over the ₹4,349.03 crore recorded in FY2024-25. Independent reporting from Business Standard the same week confirmed the same figures.
Zoom out further and the trend is not a one-year blip. Export turnover from coconut-based products has climbed from ₹3,236.83 crore in 2021-22 to ₹7,038.35 crore in 2025-26 — more than doubling in five years. The number of registered coconut exporters has grown alongside it, from 8,299 as of FY2025-26 to 8,700 by 31 July 2026, according to the same official release.
The PIB release points to a structural shift rather than a short-term price spike. India's coconut export basket, historically dominated by traditional commodities such as coconut shell charcoal, coconut oil and desiccated coconut, has broadened to include higher-value products: virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water and activated carbon. These value-added lines typically command better margins and more diversified buyer bases than raw or lightly processed coconut alone.
Policy support has moved in step with this shift. The Union Budget 2026-27 introduced a dedicated Coconut Promotion Scheme aimed at strengthening sustainability, exports and farmer incomes, administered through the Coconut Development Board. This sits within the Indian government's broader export ambition of USD 2 trillion in goods exports by 2030 and USD 21 trillion by 2047, which the PIB release explicitly frames the coconut sector's growth against.
India remains the world's largest coconut producer, with Kerala leading in cultivated area, Tamil Nadu in production volume and Andhra Pradesh in productivity per hectare. Close to 30 million people, including an estimated 10 million farmers, depend on the sector for their livelihoods — a scale that gives any export policy shift here real downstream weight across sourcing regions.
For international buyers, the practical signal is that India's coconut supply base is professionalising and diversifying beyond whole coconuts and basic oil. The rising exporter count (8,299 to 8,700 in roughly a year) means more sourcing options, but also more variance in quality and reliability — due diligence on individual suppliers still matters more than the headline growth number.
For exporters and traders, the 62% jump is a reminder that value addition, not volume alone, is where the margin growth is concentrated. A supplier moving fresh coconut into basic commodity channels is competing on price in a crowded field; one that can also speak to virgin coconut oil, coconut water or other processed lines is positioned closer to where buyer demand and government incentives are both pointing.
Business takeaway: The data does not say every coconut exporter is winning equally — it says the overall demand pool is expanding and shifting toward processed, higher-margin products. Buyers sourcing fresh coconut from India should expect a more competitive, increasingly structured supplier landscape, and would do well to ask prospective suppliers directly about their quality certifications, processing capability and export track record rather than relying on sector-level growth figures alone.

Fresh Indian coconuts are versatile tropical fruits valued for their refreshing coconut water, nutritious white kernel and wide range of culinary uses. Carefully sourced and selected for freshness, maturity, size, shell quality and overall condition, they are suitable for fresh consumption, retail, foodservice and international export markets. Coconuts can be supplied in suitable export quality with specifications and packaging arranged according to buyer requirements.
