A new Ministry of MSME statement puts hard numbers behind India's coir boom: exports up 305% in ten years, 21,000+ units now formally registered, and a government push to professionalize a sector global buyers increasingly depend on.
On October 14, 2026, India's Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises released figures that quantify something international buyers of coir products have been feeling for a while: the sector is consolidating, formalizing, and growing fast.
According to the Ministry's statement, India's exports of coir and coir products rose 305% over the past decade — from ₹1,630.33 crore in 2014-15 to ₹6,614.40 crore in the last financial year (FY26). Over the same period, more than 21,000 coir-manufacturing units have registered on the government's Udyam Registration Portal, bringing an estimated 2.3 lakh (230,000) people directly into the formal MSME ecosystem. Counting indirect employment, the Ministry puts total sector employment at over 7 lakh (700,000) workers, roughly 80% of them women from rural households.
A 305% export increase is a good topline figure, but for buyers sourcing coir pith, fibre, coco peat, grow bags, or matting, the more operationally relevant detail is what sits behind it: a sector that is shifting from scattered, informal small units toward registered, trackable MSMEs. Formal Udyam registration typically means a supplier can be verified on paper — GST status, business vintage, and compliance history — before a buyer ever places a trial order. For importers who have been burned before by informal coir suppliers that cannot produce consistent documentation, that shift reduces due-diligence friction.
The Ministry also cited more than 68,000 people trained under coir-sector skill programmes (over 80% women) and more than ₹20 crore disbursed to over 850 entrepreneurs under the government's Export Market Promotion scheme. Both point to a deliberate policy push to widen the base of export-ready coir producers, not just reward the largest incumbents.
India already accounts for roughly two-thirds of global coir production and remains the world's largest producer and exporter of coir and coir-based products. The Ministry's statement names the United States, China, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom as the leading destinations, with coir pith, fibre, yarn, and tufted mats as the main products moving through that trade. That mix lines up with where global demand has actually been heading: coco peat and coir pith as a peat-moss substitute for horticulture and hydroponics in North America and Europe, and coir fibre and yarn for matting, geotextiles, and erosion-control applications in more industrial end markets.
For importers and distributors, the practical read is that India's coir supply base is becoming easier to vet, not harder to find — the bottleneck is increasingly about picking the right registered, export-experienced supplier rather than locating a coir source at all. For anyone sourcing coco peat, coir pith, coco peat blocks, grow bags, or coir fibre at commercial volumes, that argues for working with suppliers who can show export documentation and consistent lot quality rather than the cheapest quote on a single shipment. SATA GreenX supplies coco peat and coir pith, coco peat blocks, and coir fibre for horticultural, hydroponic, and industrial buyers, and can speak to current lead times and packaging formats for each.

Coco Peat, also known as Coir Pith, is a natural, lightweight and moisture-retentive growing medium made from processed coconut husk. It is widely used in horticulture, nurseries, greenhouse cultivation, hydroponics, seed propagation and soil conditioning. Available in compressed blocks, grow bags and loose form as per buyer requirements.

Coco Peat Blocks are compressed growing media produced from processed coconut husk and coir pith. They are designed to expand when hydrated and provide a lightweight, moisture-retentive and well-aerated growing medium. Coco Peat Blocks are widely used in commercial horticulture, nurseries, greenhouse cultivation, hydroponics, propagation and container gardening. Their compressed format helps reduce storage and transportation volume, making them practical for domestic and international bulk supply.

Coir Fibre is a natural, renewable fibre extracted from the husk of mature coconuts. Known for its strength, resilience, moisture resistance and durability, it is widely used in horticulture, agriculture, erosion control, packaging, brushes, mats, ropes and various industrial applications. SATA GreenX supplies Coir Fibre sourced from reliable producers and can arrange grades, fibre characteristics, processing and packaging according to buyer requirements.
