India's rice export earnings climbed 12.9% to ₹45,739 crore between April and August 2026, but exporter data shows non-basmati shipments are growing fastest in the thinnest-margin markets — a gap industry body IREF wants addressed at this month's Bharat International Rice Conference.
India's rice exporters posted strong headline numbers for the first five months of FY26. According to data released by the Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF), combined basmati and non-basmati rice export earnings rose 12.9% year-on-year to ₹45,739 crore between April and August 2026. Basmati rice exports grew 11.6% to ₹22,864 crore, while non-basmati rice exports grew faster, up 14.2% to ₹22,874 crore — almost matching basmati in total export value for the first time in recent years.
The headline growth masks a more complicated picture on the ground. Bipin Aggarwal, IREF Vice President for Kakinada and director of a rice export firm, pointed out that non-basmati exporters are operating on tight margins, particularly in price-sensitive African and Asian markets — the same markets driving much of the volume growth. In other words, the segment growing fastest is also the segment under the most price pressure, which is a very different story from what the headline percentage suggests on its own.
Dev Garg, IREF’s National Vice President, flagged a related but separate problem: exporters often cannot easily access the government incentives and trade-agreement benefits they are technically entitled to. His point was that policy announcements on paper don’t automatically translate into incentives an exporter can actually claim — eligibility criteria, documentation requirements and awareness gaps get in the way.
Both issues are scheduled to be addressed directly at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026, running October 23–25 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. A dedicated session on October 24, “Policy Shifts 2026: Trade Schemes, Incentives and Rice Export Opportunities,” is expected to cover support-scheme eligibility, documentation, import duties, trade-agreement provisions, and export credit and insurance — essentially the operational detail that turns policy into usable margin.
Business takeaway: For manufacturers, merchant exporters and buyers trading in basmati and non-basmati rice, the lesson from this data isn’t “exports are growing, so the business case is strong.” It is narrower and more useful: growth is concentrated in markets where price competition is intense, so the exporters who protect margin will be the ones who actually use the incentive schemes, FTA provisions and export credit tools on offer — not just the ones chasing volume. Before committing to a new non-basmati order in a price-sensitive market, it is worth applying the same discipline recommended for any export deal: check the landed cost, confirm FTA or duty eligibility for the destination, and only then quote.
